Summer Fairy Door Trail at Trap Grounds Nature Reserve | Oxford
1 August, 2022 - 4 September, 2022
FreeThe wonderful blogger Little Oxplorers is back this year with magical fairy door trail at the Trap Grounds Nature Reserve in Oxford. We loved visiting last year and it’s a great way to combine a little walk with some excitement for younger kids along the way.
There are fairy doors hidden amongst the trees, fairies fluttering around and the super cute fairy postboxes. It’s not too long so a great walk for little legs with the excitement of spotting each fairy door. A little bumpy in places but possible to do with a pushchair and part of the route is along a winding boardwalk.
Photos below are from our trip in 2019.
The Trap Grounds form the last remaining wild open space along the Oxford Canal between the city centre and the northern suburbs. The site lies between the canal and the railway line, immediately south of the Frenchay Road canal bridge (grid ref. SP 503081, nearest postcode OX2 6TF). An information board on the towpath marks the entrance, at the start of a track called Frog Lane.
For Satnav use Frenchay Rd, OX1 1AF. There is free restricted parking in the surrounding streets but much of it is for residents only. You’ll find bike racks on Frenchay Road if you’re able to cycle there or you could make a longer trip and walk there along the canal path from Oxford.
I’ve previously visited on a Sunday and there are no restrictions then so that’s probably the best time to go. Once you park, walk over the little humped bridge and take an immediate left. You’ll see the canal below and there’s a sign post on the canal path on your right. Keep an eye out for the wonderful Kingfisher mural under the bridge.
