10 December, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 4 January, 2025 @ 5:00 pm
The National Theatre’s acclaimed production returns in all-new UK and Ireland Tour. War Horse will be on stage in in Oxford at the New Theatre from 10th Dec 2024 to 4th January 2025.
The stage adaptation of War Horse is a masterclass in storytelling, blending innovative theatrical techniques with raw emotional power. Based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved novel, this production by the National Theatre of Great Britain immerses audiences in the journey of Albert Narracott and his cherished horse, Joey, against the backdrop of World War I. It is an experience that transcends traditional theater, delivering a visually stunning and deeply moving narrative. While it is emotionally powerful there is also a wonderful golden thread of humour that runs throughout.
The most striking feature of the show is its breathtaking puppetry. The life-sized horse puppets, created by the Handspring Puppet Company, are marvels of design and engineering. Operated by a team of visible puppeteers, these creations move with astonishing realism, capturing every flick of the tail, snort, and gallop with an almost magical authenticity. The puppeteers, far from being a distraction, enhance the emotional resonance of the animals, allowing audiences to connect deeply with Joey and his fellow horses. We also loved the goose too!
The production’s visual design is equally compelling. The minimalistic set, dominated by a torn-paper backdrop, provides a versatile canvas for dramatic lighting and projections. These elements evoke everything from the pastoral beauty of the English countryside to the grim devastation of the battlefields. The innovative staging allows the narrative to flow seamlessly, creating a dynamic and immersive world.
Emotionally, War Horse delivers a powerful punch. The story navigates themes of love, loyalty, and the senselessness of war with poignant sensitivity. The ensemble cast excels in bringing these themes to life, with Albert’s unwavering devotion to Joey serving as the heart of the tale. The music, including stirring folk melodies performed live, adds another layer of emotional depth, amplifying moments of both joy and sorrow.
War Horse is a triumph of theatrical innovation and storytelling. It is a deeply affecting experience that showcases the best of what live theater can achieve. Whether you are drawn by the technical brilliance of its puppetry or the heartwarming tale of courage and connection, War Horse is a must-see for.
