Looking for a fun adventure in London? We recently visited the Twist Museum which is based on Oxford Street in London.
I’ve been wanting to visit here for a while and it definitely lived up to all of our expectations. The Twist museum, or “London’s home of Illusions” is described as a playground for your perceptions , and it certainly was for both us adults and our children!
Twist Museum Experience
I don’t want to spoilt any of the surprises that the museum has to offer so I’m not going to describe the different illusions and exhibitons on offer – a sneaky peek with some of the pictures in this blog!
But as soon as you arrive at the museum the aesthetic excitement begins, as the entrance is a quickly tunnel of mirrors (with an accessible lift). Inside, there is a buggy park and free lockers for your bags and coats so you can be as free as possible to enjoy the experience.
The suggested time for the whole experience is 45mins-60minutes however we spent 2.5hours in total! The tickets are not time allocated so you can spend as long as you like, and go around as many times as you like- which is such a bonus with children so you don’t feel rushed.
The experience is immersive and educational, but sensory and so fun. So I would say it ticks the boxes for lots of different children’s interest. It’s also really interesting for us grownups too!
There are different rooms and places to sit and relax. The experience encourages you to take photos within each exhibition, and this changes the way it looks. This is fanscinating and great fun!!! A firm favourite for the children was the anti – gravity room!!! The exhibition is accessible as there are no stairs.
Twist Museum Facilities
Aside from the exhibition itself, there is a small gift shop with lots of cool science type gifts/ magic tricks.
There aren’t any food facilities on site ( sometimes a good thing when travelling with kids!) but there is a vending machine that sells chocolate and crisps.
There are toilets and baby changing, and a large seated space just outside by the reception, to debrief, regroup and let the kids have some more run around time!
Where is the Twist Museum in London?
The museum is conveniently located a 3 minute walk from Oxfordshire Circus, which is on the Circle and Victoria underground line. This is easy enough to get to from Hertfordshire either taking a direct train into central London, or driving a little closer into London and catching the Underground from here. We usually like to drive to Oakwood as it takes about 20 minutes for us to get to in the car, and there is usually parking on the residential streets near the station. And remember, children under 11 are free on the London underground with a paying adult!
Making the most of the day
If you’re like me, and you like to max out on the adventure, especially when you’re somewhere different, the great thing about the location of the Twist museum is there are so many other things to see and do in Central London.
As we were already in Oxford Circus, we visited Hamleys Toy Store and we were loving the Harry Potter display on the ground floor. Hamleys is always so fun because of the friendly staff and the toy demonstrations that our children loved watching. We also walked through Carnaby street which is so pretty. China town and Leicester Square are nearby too, for more things to see, including the huge Lego store. All to visit for free!!
